I’m sorry but where did Sam think the blood came from? He questioned what the guy said to him, but not the fact that his torn out throat was suddenly just fine? Did I miss something? Even if he didn’t remember being slashed… blood… all over his throat. I mean, at the very least it would spark some mild curiosity.
I think of all the moments between Dorothy and Charlie, this was my favourite. Because it gives a different frame for the final scene than if Charlie had flirted with Dorothy.
I wondered why they didn’t have Dorothy come out in the episode as gay or bi or queer, after all, there was certainly enough subtextual evidence to support such a reading of the character as such (she looks like such a beautiful, smitten kitten here). But it occurred to me that doing so would make the final scene a very different thing indeed. We’re so programmed to see any woman’s story as a potential romance first, as though the only thing a woman ever wants in life is a romantic partner. Within the context of that societal programming, revealing Dorothy to be queer would make her a likely or potential romantic partner for Charlie. But then Charlie’s departure would be read as her throwing aside her life to pursue a romance. That would undercut the reason for her departure, which was to pursue the life she has always wanted and yearned for. Romance is NOT the only thing in a woman’s life, despite what media has tried to drill into our heads.
What Robbie Thompson and SPN gave us instead was a woman possessed of her own goals and ambitions, who pursues them with a friend. She goes off, not because she’s chasing a romantic relationship, but because she wants to have a certain kind of life, one filled with magic and fighting the good fight. And she goes after that life, even though it’s filled with uncertainty and danger. Charlie is the viewer’s avatar in many ways (addressed here by subjecttochange8) and she’s going off to live her dream, which is a beautiful message to the viewers. And maybe it’s going to include a romantic element, maybe Dorothy will be the one for her, but that’s going to build out of friendship and be the stronger for it. But it might not, and Charlie will still have an awesome friendship and fantastic adventures with another woman.
And that’s what makes Charlie magnificent. That she’s a woman who aims to have a wonderful and exciting life, and who pursues that ambition. That she’s not just interested in romance and love, though she would be open to it if it came to her. That’s she a lesbian whose entire storyline and characterization doesn’t revolve around her sexuality. That she’s a nerdy fan who is also self-possessed, sensible, clever and a hero in her own right.
And that’s what makes Charlie a great character. She defies the typical media representation of a woman, of a fan, of a nerd, of a lesbian. She’s the best type of representation, she’s human representation.
Yes, exactly! I saw the chemistry there, and as hot as it would have been for those two to make out, I’m glad it didn’t go in that direction. Plus, it’s really nice to see a female character who’s bad ass and isn’t made to be a love interest for either of the guys and isn’t defaulted to being a lesbian. As much as I love there being lesbian characters out there, it bugs me that that’s the only thing stopping an attractive woman from being a love interest or a sexual object for male characters on almost every show out there.
Come on, guys! The tumblr community is all about helping each other out, and if we can just get some people to make even small donations, we may make it in time.
Our group is trying to get kickstarter funding for Locura Falls, pictured below, and we only have ONE WEEK LEFT. If we don’t reach our goal by then, we will get NONE of the money pledged! For those of you who like horror, the supernatural, creepy small towns, or all of the above, please help the team fund this project and/or reblog!
Please spread the word as much as you can! If one hundred people donate twenty dollars, we will reach our goal! But if even more people than that are involved, even a few bucks each will help us! We want to be able to release this awesome horror series for free at the best quality we possibly can. We’re not above begging here, so please help us out!
We’ve worked very hard to get even as far as we have regarding the donations. With less than a week to go, we’re cutting it close. There are incentives for donations, so please, please, PLEASE help us out. Even reblogging and encouraging your followers to throw a few bucks into the pot would make a huge difference. Again, IF WE DO NOT REACH OUR GOAL, WE DO NOT GET ANY OF THE MONEY SO FAR! That means that all of our hard work was for nothing, and we’re back to square one.
Please help! I’ve seen tumblr do some amazing things for people. Everyone who helps us out will be thanked in a number of ways (especially donators)!
Hey guys! Please consider donating to this awesome kickstarter! For those of you who like horror, the supernatural, creepy small towns, or all of the above, please consider helping the team fund this project!
Bless SPN for this scene. Bless Carver for turning the audience’s own preconceived notions on their head. Bless him for the archery symbolism that ties neatly back to not only the theme of hearts, but also Artemis whom we saw fall in love inappropriately according to the precepts of Olympus. Bless the two plaid-wearing, bearded scruffy men who are stand-ins for Hunters and Dean’s notion of über masculinity who also fall in love, but this time with heaven’s express and noteworthy nudge. Bless this rare (the cupid did say her arrows were being directed less and less frequently) and heaven-mandated event to be one of the last things heaven does before it stops meddling in the affairs of humans. Bless this event for happening in front of Dean and Cas. Bless Cas for his nonchalance and easy acceptance and Dean’s pause of consideration. Bless this neon sign toward Destiel becoming definitively canon.
UGGGGHHHHHHHH. MY HEART. I both loved it and hated it for different reasons. I’m scared to see what next season holds, and I’m also really sad that they decided to really cast aside the friendship between Dean and Cas so much in this season. But at least we FINALLY addressed the issue between Sam and Dean. We’ve needed that confrontation all damn season. I don’t want to wait another four months for the next episode. >:[
Last night I got so excited about this post that I made a SPN finale BINGO.
Let’s be real, we’ll be lucky if there’s any spaces left on this board by the end of the opening credits.
Interesting… Some of these are definite, we just know it. Though the Crowley being a fallen angel one would have to retcon the show to be real, since Crowley has possessed people without permission before, and angels always need permission. So I’m thinking that theory is off. The others, though, I’m thinking like 80% of them will probably happen. This episode is going to be depressing.
I love this man so much. I have a feeling that if I ever meet a guy who actually works well enough with my weirdness to marry me, it will be someone like him. (It makes me really, really sad, though, that people have made Misha feel uncomfortable and nervous about answering Destiel questions because they accuse him of queer-baiting. People seriously need to shut up. If anyone is awesome and supportive of the gay community on that show, it’s Misha.)
I'm a writer of many genres, but what I release online is almost always what you might call yaoi, m/m, guy on guy, or gay romance. Not that my stories themselves are necessarily classified as romances. Here you'll find any projects I'm actively working on, as well as posts related to my current interests. Right now, I'm really invested in Supernatural, but I also post things related to yaoi in general, feminism, people's rights, and a handful of other shows/movies that I'm into.
Please note, I'll happily follow back any of my readers who would like to add me, but if you like to post disturbing images such as animal abuse/death/torture (whether it's real or fake), or graphic self-harm photos, etc. I'm afraid I won't be able to add you! I'm super sensitive to that sort of thing. Sorry!
